Cloud-based solutions have completely disrupted the telecom industry this year. There are signs everywhere. From the merge of Avaya and RingCentral to Cisco Unified Communications, to Salesforce and AWS coming together, to finally Zoom giving out its services, it is evident that the telecom industry is shaken up and telecom managers need to adopt some tactics in order to survive and thrive in the industry.
Some tactics may be offenses, some defenses. It is on the managers to choose the best set of tactics that not only work for their team but also maintain the culture and strategy along with the pace. Let's look at five such tactics available for telecom managers to choose from
Enable Innovation and Re-structure Telecom Architecture
Immediate action such be taken to enable the telecom architecture for the future. One best step is usually to move dial plan management and call routing onto directory-enabled gateways. Another way is to define the enterprises preferred Communication Platform as a Service (CPaaS) provider in some combination of external and internal services.
Firewalls (and Security) are your Friends
The IT security teams must establish guidelines for any new communication service in your enterprise. It must be assured that user-driven selections of cloud-based communications apps are identified early on because such guidelines already exist for software applications. It also must be ensured that the choices are optimal and strategic. Firewalls act as a friend as they can block any non-approved communications protocols or media streams.

A careful inventory of the services and technologies should be taken on which a team relies on. It helps to determine which can be eliminated and which to retain for the existing 'legacy' technologies, and which are ready for innovation and transformation.
